My Story

Hi Everyone! My name is Sarah and I am 30 years old. I would consider myself a pretty healthy person. I watch what I eat and exercise on a regular basis. Growing up I have always had health issues. Asthma, Allergies, Depression, Hernias, 3 tonsil surgeries, 10+ procedures on my nose, a back procedure, etc. 2 weeks ago, I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian  Syndrome).

What is PCOS?  "Polycystic ovary syndrome is a problem in which a woman’s hormones are out of balance. It can cause problems with your periods and make it difficult to get pregnant. PCOS may also cause unwanted changes in the way you look. If it is not treated, over time it can lead to serious health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease.  PCOS is common, affecting as many as 1 out of 15 women." (Web MD)

My symptoms have included sharp pains, that almost bring me to my knees, on each ovary 14 days into my cycle, weight gain, intense sugar cravings, irregular periods, fatigue, 9 cysts on my left and 6 on my right (they look like a string of pearls), my progesterone level is at .2 when it should be in the teens to 20's, and now I am starting to lose my hair.

My doctor suggested that I try the natural approach for the next 3 months. Low GI diet (Paleo/Atkins), vitamin supplements (Multi, Biotin, Chromium, Iron, and D). 14 days into my cycle I need to have blood drawn and an ultrasound. I am trying to stay positive and have an awesome support group of friends and family.

I have been much better about my sugar intake. I have cut out Starbucks and Coldstone and I make Paleo desserts that do not use sugar or dairy.

The point of this blog is not for me to get sympathy from others but for me to tell my story and hopefully meet other women who are going through the same thing.

Thank you for listening.
